The FedEx Cup playoffs get underway as the Tour moves to New Jersey for The Barclays, held at Plainfield Country Club for the first time ever. The field may have caught a break weather-wise, with some heavy rains slowing down an otherwise difficult par-71 course. Here’s a look at the weekend’s top contenders…

Steve Stricker (12/1): Stricker returns from a week off after a disappointing Sunday at the PGA Championship. Frankly, he’s putting far too well to not be the clear front-runner in this field (Tour-leading 1.070 strokes gained). He’s riding 11 consecutive top-20’s; the last time he wasn’t top-20 was February.

Adam Scott (15/1): The Aussie’s hot streak continued at the PGA Championship two weeks ago, when he posted his third top-7 in four starts. He’s moved up to 10th on the Tour in All-Around statistical ranking.

Luke Donald (12/1): Donald is still sitting on some solid momentum after a T8 at the PGA Championship. He’s won twice in Europe over the past three months, along with a combined five top-10’s between Europe and state-side.

Zach Johnson (40/1): He got hot earlier this summer, and Johnson has been hanging around at a lot of tournaments. He’s gone sixth or better in three of his past six starts.

Matt Kuchar (25/1): He won The Barclays in a playoff at Ridgewood CC last year, and Kuchar has shown signs of life in an inconsistent year. He followed up two missed cuts in July with two top-20’s in August.

Jason Day (25/1): A missed cut at the PGA Championship stopped his momentum, but Day should regain his form in New Jersey. He’s gone top-12 at the The Barclays the past two years, including a T5 last year.

Charles Howell III (40/1): Howell’s been building momentum over the past two months. His T4 at the Wyndham Championship last week was his fourth top-5 in his past seven starts.

Dustin Johnson (25/1): Johnson’s been up and down all year and has yet to break through for a win in 2011. His distance off the tee (312.4, fourth on the Tour) should serve him well this weekend.

Following a wild week in Atlanta for the PGA Championship, the Tour heads to Greensboro for the Wyndham Invitational. This year’s field is underwhelming, to say the least. Sedgefield has been one of the easiest courses on the Tour, and this year should be no different. Here’s the top contenders in a week where the scores should go very low…

Webb Simpson (20/1): Quite simply, he’s the best player in this field. He leads the Tour in all-around scoring, and on top of that he’ll have a home-course advantage, since he’s from Raleigh. He shot a 63 on Sunday here last year, finishing T8.

David Toms (12/1): Toms almost won another Wanamaker last week, finishing with a 65-67 over the weekend en route to a T4. He’s gone top-10 in his two starts since returning from a hip injury that kept him out for a month.

Lucas Glover (30/1): Glover’s been top-24 in this tournament in each of the past six years, including a seventh-place finish last year when he “faded” with 67’s on Saturday and Sunday.

Brandt Snedeker (25/1): He’s been top-8 here each of the past two years, and he’s had one of the best putters on Tour all year (second with .866 strokes gained per round).

Spencer Levin (40/1): He’s 11th on the Tour in scoring average (69.71) and has four top-10’s on the year, which makes him a serious contender this weekend. Levin was solid in Atlanta last week, with a T26.

Bill Haas (20/1): Haas shot three sub-70 rounds en route to a T12 at the PGA Championship, just two weeks after a playoff runner-up at the Greenbrier Classic. He’s seventh on the tour in Greens in Regulation (69.56%).

Charles Howell III (25/1): Howell got hot earlier in the summer, stringing together three top-5’s in June and July, and has made eight straight cuts. He’s ninth on the Tour in scoring average (69.64). The last time he came to Sedgefield, in 2009, he shot a final-round 63 en route to a T13.

Brendon de Jonge (30/1): He’s just been hanging around lately: de Jonge has a couple of top-10’s in his past four starts, and broke 70 twice in Atlanta (finishing T26) last week. With 10 top-10’s over the past two years, the Zimbabwe native is ready to break through.

The PGA Championship returns to the Atlanta Athletic Club for the first time since 2001 this week, welcoming a wide-open field. Here’s a look at some of the favorites to host the Wanamaker Trophy at the season’s final major…

Lee Westwood (15/1): Outside of a disappointing showing at a wild British Open, Westwood has been in contention at every tournament he’s played since May, with top-15 finishes in his eight starts. After shooting a fourth-round 65 to finish T9 at the Bridgestone, he’s primed for a big week in Atlanta. He sat out last year's PGA Championship, but has placed top-3 in five of his past eight majors.

Rory McIlroy (8/1): His performance at the Bridgestone Invitational (T6) was his best since dominating the U.S. Open. A year ago, he followed up a T9 at the Bridgestone with a T3 at the PGA Championship.

Martin Kaymer (30/1): He was on the receiving end of Dustin Johnson’s collapse at Whistling Straits a year ago, and while Kaymer hasn’t lit the world on fire since, he has been solid of late. He went top-20 in three starts, including a T12 at the British Open, before finishing 29th at the Bridgestone Invitational last weekend. At those odds, the defending champ is a nice pick.

Luke Donald (15/1): He’s bounced back nicely since a disastrous missed cut at the British, placing T17 at the Canadian Open and a runner-up at last week’s Bridgestone Invitational. With his putting, he has as good a shot as anyone.

Adam Scott (20/1): With long-time Tiger Woods caddie (and fellow Aussie) Stevie Williams by his side Scott has strung together a nice run of tournaments, culminating in last week’s domination at the Bridgestone Invitational. He finished T3 at the AT&T National to kick off July, and started strong before fading to a T25 at the British Open. He also had a huge showing at The Masters in April, with a T2.

David Toms (50/1): Toms won the PGA Championship the last time it was held at the AAC. His strong showing at the Bridgestone Invitational after a month off (T9 with four sub-70 rounds) bodes well heading into this weekend.

Dustin Johnson (20/1): Johnson will be the sentimental favorite as he tries to bounce back from last year’s controversial collapse at Whistling Straits. He put together an impressive month in Europe, including his runner-up at the British Open, before a disappointing 48th at last week’s Bridgestone Invitational.

Phil Mickelson (20/1): Mickelson’s performance since the British Open doesn’t bode well for Atlanta. He missed the cut at the Greenbrier Classic, then finished T48 with only one sub-70 round at the Bridgestone Invitational. He’s just 71st on the Tour in putting (.164 strokes gained) and 177th in driving accuracy (53.14%).

Tiger Woods (15/1): He had plenty of rust to shake off at last week’s Bridgestone Invitational, but there was little to like about Woods’ weekend (T37 after a first-round 68). His putter has shown no signs of getting hot, and until it does, there’s no good reason to think Woods will contend.

Rickie Fowler (+3000) – Tied for 9th and 8th in the first two WGC events and finished in a tie for 5th at the British Open less than a month ago. On verge of Championship but probably not this one.
Dustin Johnson (+2000) – First PGA event since imploding at yet another Major he had won – the British Open. 2nd in the WGC-Cadillac and Nice play at +2000 here.
Rory McIlroy (+1000) – Favorite to win at Firestone for a reason – this course sets up sweet-ass for the U.S. Open annihilator. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I can’t help but think of Scooby Doo EVERY time I say Rory. SEE! I told you!
Phil Mickelson (+1800) – Lo siento Gringos but WGC events are not Phil’s bag baby! I would rather take him at +1000 for the PGA Championship 2011 next week.
Tiger Woods (+1500) - C’mon people, he has won at Firestone 7 times, and he is +1500 at Bet US to win the WGC Bridgestone Invitational. I’ve said this before about Tiger’s ridiculous payout for a win, and I’ll say it again – BET TIGER WOODS! A Buck on the Tiger gets you 15 Benjamins back baby. You should also jump into the Woods in the A-T-L for the PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club. Tiger is +1400 to win next week at the year’s last PGA Major, and he has 14 major wins under that pelt of his so far. COINCIDENCE? I think not! This price will go down, down, down after he shows his strength this week in Akron, Ohio.

A year ago at the inaugural Greenbrier Classic, Stuart Appleby shot a final round 59 to take the title. Don’t expect this year’s field to pick up where Appleby and Co. left off last year. The Old White TPC has undergone some changes, with a narrowing of the fairways and firming of the greens. Here’s a look at the favorites on the re-done course…

Charles Howell III (20/1): Howell has gone top-5 in his past three starts in the States, which he followed with a respectable T28 at the British Open. Last year at the Greenbrier, he shot four rounds of 67 or less en route to a T9.

Sergio Garcia (15/1): It seems like Garcia has been building up to this. He’s finished in the top-25 in 11 of 15 starts this year, and top-10 in his past three.

Webb Simpson (20/1): Simpson is still looking for his first career win, but he’s been hanging around the past five starts. He has top-20’s in his past five starts, including two top-10’s.

Jeff Overton (25/1): Last year’s runner-up, Overton kicked off July with his best finish of the year (T3) at the AT&T National.

Phil Mickelson (10/1): He’s back after taking a week off following his runner-up at the British Open. Mickelson has five top-10’s this year, including three in his past seven starts.

Brandt Snedeker (30/1): He had registered four straight top-25’s before missing the cut at the British Open. More importantly, Snedeker has had one of the Tour’s hottest putters all year long.

Stuart Appleby (100/1): No doubt, the Aussie has been a disaster of late; he hasn’t made a cut since May. But Appleby wasn’t exactly sharp going into Greenbrier last year. At these odds, there’s nothing wrong with the defending champ as a longshot this week.

2011 PGA Championship odds

Rory McIlroy didn’t capture the British Open championship this past weekend, but that didn’t prevent oddsmakers from listing him as a favorite for the second consecutive major.

5Dimes sportsbook released its odds for the 93rd PGA Championship, which will be played Aug. 8-11 at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Ga., and McIlroy will go off as an 8-to-1 favorite.

Phil Mickelson (+1200), Lee Westwood (+1400), Luke Donald (+1400) and Tiger Woods (+1600) round out the top five.

Woods will be one of the major question marks over the next few weeks, as it still isn’t known whether or not he will be in the field. Woods, who injured his left leg during the Master’s earlier this year, has not played since the Player’s Championship, where he was only able to finish 9 holes before withdrawing.

He also fired his longtime caddy, Steve Williams, on Wednesday.

I’ll have further commentary on the PGA championship next month, but until then, here are a few players whose odds appear somewhat intriguing at first glance:

David Toms (+6500): Toms won the PGA Championship in 2001, the last time the event was held at the Atlanta Athletic Club. However, the course has been renovated since then, and the event will be played on the highlands course.

Jim Furyk (+6500): Furyk finished 7th in 2001, but has greatly improved his game since then. He is one of golf’s most consistent players and should stay in contention throughout the event. He offers decent value for those willing to take a risk.

Dustin Johnson (+2500): My pick to win the PGA. Johnson has finished in the top 10 at the championship the last two years, and is almost always in contention at majors. Eventually, he’s going to break through and capture one of these darn titles, and I think he has a great chance to do it in Atlanta.

After a wild week at the British Open, things get back to normal as the Tour heads up north. Heavy rains have softened up the greens at Shaughnessy, which last hosted a tour event in 2005, so despite some unfamiliarity with the course look for scores to go low this week. Here’s a look at some of the top contenders…

Ryan Moore (25/1): The Washington state native should feel right at home in the Pacific Northwest. He was a runner-up at Shaughnessy the last time the Open was played here back in 2005. He had a solid showing at the British Open (T28) and tied for second at the Travelers Championship the last week in June.

Matt Kuchar (12/1): He missed the cut at the British Open, ending his streak of 29 made cuts. But he’s still been remarkably consistent in 2011, and he was in contention at Shaughnessy in 2005 (T14).

Charl Schwartzel (15/1): He’s hung around again and again this year (seven top-25 finishes), including a T16 at the British Open.

Luke Donald (8/1): He’ll have something to prove after a disastrous missed cut at the British. He won in Scotland the previous week, and is certainly the best golfer in this field with eight top-10 finishes in 11 Tour events this year.

Anthony Kim (30/1): He’s still trying to find his form after an injury-plagued 2010, but last week was a major confidence boost for Kim. He finished T5 at the British, playing Friday-Saturday-Sunday, when things were especially difficult, at 2-under par.

Spencer Levin (40/1): A horrendous Saturday took him out of contention at the British Open, but he managed to sandwich an 81 with a couple of 1-under 69’s in very tough conditions. He had two top-15’s in his three starts prior to the British.

Bo Van Pelt (25/1): Getting back to North American soil should do Van Pelt some good. He had a disappointing week at the British (T57), but had a run of five straight top-15 finishes prior to that.

Rickie Fowler (15/1): He’s put together a couple of nice weeks, with a T5 at the British Open preceded by a T13 at the AT&T National. He’ll have to solve his Sunday woes, though, as he carries a 71.83 final-round scoring average (134th on the Tour).

A year ago, Steve Stricker needed a four-day total of 258 (-26) to defend his title at the John Deere Classic, and his opening-round 60 was overshadowed by the 59 Paul Goydos shot on Thursday. In other words, get ready for another shootout at the TPC Deere Run. Here’s a look at who’s most likely to come out on top…

Steve Stricker (7/1): He’ll be fresh after taking two weeks off, and his track record was strong before the break: seven straight top-20 finishes, including a win at the Memorial to kick off June. Obviously, a three-peat is awfully difficult (only seven golfers have ever done it at any tournament), but considering his performance in Silvis, combined with his Tour-leading par breaker percentage (25.83%), Stricker has a great shot to do it.

Charles Howell III (20/1): After taking two weeks off after a T3 finish at St. Jude, Howell picked up right where he left off with four sub-70 rounds at the AT&T National for a second straight T3. If Stricker trips up, Howell has as good a chance as anyone to hoist the trophy on Sunday.

Jason Day (10/1): He’s gone top-10 in five of his past six starts, and Day has hung around at the John Deere each of the past two years, finishing T15 both times.

Zach Johnson (15/1): The Iowa native has been right there at the John Deere each of the past two years, including a T2 in 2009. He was a bit inconsistent at the Travelers two weeks ago, but had two separate runs of five straight birdies en route to a T24.

John Rollins (30/1): He took a week to rest after a T2 at the Travelers, which gave him two top-10s in his past three starts. He missed the cut here a year ago, but Rollins is playing much better this summer than he was a year ago.

Jonathan Byrd (25/1): The winner here in 2007, Byrd hasn’t played since missing the cut at the U.S. Open. But he was on a nice run prior to that with two top-10s and three top-25s in four starts.

David Toms (20/1): He hasn’t played here regularly, but Toms won the John Deere back in 1997 and looked sharp two weeks ago at the Travelers (T17 with four sub-70 rounds, including a 64 on Sunday). He’s probably longer than 20/1 odds, but with his accuracy off the tee (74.41%, best on the Tour) and iron play (71.86% GIR, second on the Tour), he’s clearly a hot putter away from title contention.

Ole Miss will use tonights game as a chance to show the rest of the country that they are for real and QB Jevan Sneed maybe the first quarterback taken in the 2010 NFL draft now that Sam Bradford went down 2 weeks ago vs BYU. Ole Miss is 9-0 ATS after scoring 40 or more points and South Carolina is 5-2 ATS off a 20-point or greater victory. The Rebels have won eight games in a row (6-1 ATS). South Carolina will need to try to keep the Rebels Offense off the field with the running game. However, the Gamecocks are last in the SEC in rushing and Ole Miss is 4th in the Nation and Tops in the SEC in Rush defense.

I look for Ole Miss to break out tonight and a big game for Jevan Sneed.

Tonight the #10 Boise State Broncoes face the Fresno State Bulldogs at Fresno State. Boise State is 54-2 in conference play since 2002 in the WAC. They also have beat the Bulldogs three straight including last years 61-10 win and are 7-1 ats since 1992.

Tonight we have another great ACC match up for Thursday Night. Miami has not fared well over the last four seasons vs the Yellow Jackets, but this is a new Miami team that is looking for a big revenge factor tonight. Miami is 12-1 on Thursday night’s but are 4-8 ats in those contest. The Canes are 1-6 SU and ATS versus Georgia Tech dating back 32 years and are 0-6 against the spread at home when playing with revenge. The Hurricanes are only 17-24 ATS since joining the ACC in conference play.

HOWEVER, Georgia Tech s not the same team that beat the Canes last year. The upset win that the Yellow Jackets pulled off last year was a cold night in November and we all know the Miami players dont play well in the cold. The rambling wreck aslo only had 1-first down last week against a Clemson Tiger team that dominated the 2nd half of the game.

With Miami new offense coordinator Mark Whipple, who helped Ben Roethlisberger win his first Super Bowl and coached Massachusetts to a Division I-AA (now known as the Championship Subdivision) national title in 1998. Whipple who is returning to the college game after four seasons as an NFL assistant will have the CANES offense ready to go.

College Football Week 1 Thursday Night

It is finally here, the first week of college football with 5-games on tonight but there only a few games that out of the schdule that we will be playing. The first game is South Carolina vs NC State with State having the revenge on there mind. The gamecocks lost 7 players to the NFL with 5-coaches being replaced and only 12 starters back from last year.

The Wolfpack have 15 starters back and head coach Tom Obrian is 15-8 ATS at NC State. NC State is 4-1-1 vs Gamecocks and returning rookie of the year in the ACC is 9-0 Ats in his last 9-games and 5- su wins. The Gamecocks are 1-7-1 the week before playing Georgia. The only stat NC State has is Steve Spurrier is 21-0 in opening games, however the Wolfpack is 9-2 last 11 opening games.

Prior to last years shutout NC State had won 4-straight vs SC and all 4-wins were by double digits.

1: Philadelphia Phillies (53-38, +$878) (5-0, +$506 in L/5) Not only are the defending champs 5-0 in their L/5, but theyâ€™re 10-0 in their L/10! As a result, theyâ€™ve opened up a commanding 6.5-game lead in the NL East standings and should coast towards a spot in the playoffs. In this run, theyâ€™re doing it with both their hitting and pitching. The bats have hummed to the tune of 5.7 runs per game in that stretch, while the arms have held the opposition to just 2.6 runs per game. 1B Ryan Howard has blasted three dingers and driven in seven runs in those ten games, but perhaps even more impressive is his whopping .500 OBP. Philadelphia is the only team in the bigs to have four players hit at least 20 home runs apiece. To put that in perspective; Howard, OF Raul Ibanez, OF Jayson Werth, and 2B Chase Utley have all combined to hit more home runs than any other team has in the NL East this season.

2: New York Yankees (56-37, +$45) (5-0, +$500 in L/5) The Bronx Bombers are back in first place in the AL East, and they may not give that spot up any time in the near future. Theyâ€™ve opened up the second half with five straight home wins after losing their L/3 before the All-Star Break, and they certainly starting to look like a playoff team. Whereas the BoSox seemed to be the runaway favorites in the division just a week ago, it sure looks like they are going to be fighting with Tampa Bay and a host of other teams for the AL Wild Card spot instead of the divisional crown. The Yanks have the #1 offense in baseball, as theyâ€™re averaging 5.51 runs per game. They also lead the majors with 139 home runs. Imagine how impressive that number wouldâ€™ve been had A-Rod been in the lineup all seasonâ€¦

3: Tampa Bay Rays (52-42, +$272) (4-1, +$309 in L/5) Hereâ€™s more bad news for Red Sox nationâ€¦ The Rays are playing just as well as the Yanks are, but theyâ€™re doing it on the road. Tampa Bay is currently in the middle of a 10-game road trip, but once itâ€™s finished with this trip, thereâ€™s a boatload of games to be held at Tropicana Field. Last season, the Rays played .667 ball at home, and if theyâ€™re going to make their move to get back into the postseason, thatâ€™s where theyâ€™re going to have to do it. SP Jeff Niemann won his ninth game of the season last night, and if Roy Halladay ends up getting traded to the National League before the trade deadline, he may be making himself a legitimate Cy Young Award contender. Heâ€™s already #1 in the minds of sports bettors as the top starting money pitcher in the game.

Tonight we will be having two PHATLINE`s for the Friday Night MLB plays. We go with Carlos Zambrano and the Cubs for the first game. ZAMBRANO is 67-44 (+21.5 Units) against the money line in road games in games played on a grass field since 1997. ZAMBRANO is 6-2 when starting against WASHINGTON with an ERA of 2.97 and a WHIP of 1.162. His team's record is 6-3 (+1.8 units) in these starts. CHICAGO CUBS are 49-20 (+26.7 Units) against the money line vs. teams who strand 7.5 or more runners on base per game over the last 2 seasons.

All of the stats are great but the best stat is they are playing the worst team in the league with the Nationals.

Game two we go with the Red Sox as I look for them to stay hot and the Blue Jays still trying to unload Roy, The Red Sox are there for Business and the Blue Jays are throwing in the towel for the year.

WHICH RUNNING BACK WILL TRAVEL THE FARTHEST?

Here is the entire list, with my comments, and last year's yardage total in parentheses:

ADRIAN PETERSON +225 (1760)
-- He is once again the guy the Vikings will count on to get it done, with or without Brett Favre. You may want to count on him too, because he is quite simply the best in the business. He may be running behind a rookie right tackle, though.

MICHAEL TURNER +450 (1699)
-- Last year we thought he had an excellent chance, and he almost went all the way. This year could be even better.

DEANGELO WILLIAMS +800 (1515)
-- Reaching last year's total could be tough. This is more of a two-headed situation (with Jonathan Stewart), and that takes carries away from a guy.

CLINTON PORTIS +1200 (1487)
-- Portis got tired in the second half of last season. Expect him to get more relief early on from Ladell Betts, which won't help him in this derby.

STEVE SLATON +1400 (1282)
-- He is definitely the Texans' go-to guy, and you have to know that coach Gary Kubiak comes from the Denver culture, where he feels he has to run the ball. Slaton had more yardage than any other rookie last year. He can get into the 1600-yard range, which gives him a chance that may make it worth playing at this price.

LADAINIAN TOMLINSON +1400 (1110)
-- Some people think he is poised for a big comeback year. I don't doubt that he can improve on last year's figure, but he's got a lot of mileage on him, and last year was not a good sign as he was coming off an injury.

STEVEN JACKSON +1600 (1042)
-- The Rams are very committed to building their new offense around Jackson, and he has the ability to pull it off, but will THEY be good enough? Remember also that Jackson, at his best, distributes his production pretty well between rushing and receiving.

CHRIS JOHNSON +1600 (1228)
-- A lot of people look at Tennessee's backfield as more of a two-headed monster, but I don't think they'd have any problem putting LenDale White into a more subordinate and/or short yardage role, and letting Johnson make huge plays more often. As a 16/1 shot, he may be well worth a pop, because he is one of the fee guys on this list who can take it coast-to-coast from anywhere. Possible snag - he may see some time at wide receiver.

RYAN GRANT +2000 (1203)
-- Grant showed in the latter stages of 2008 that his 2007 heroics were no fluke. However, I wonder whether the Packers will just be flooding the air with football too much to accommodate him in any quest for the rushing lead.

FRANK GORE +2000 (1036)
-- Gore has been in the position before where he has challenged for the league rushing lead. He also has a coach who is very committed to running the football. That's not a bad combination for a guy who still has the ability, and will go far if he can stay healthy. Put him down on your list of longshot possibilities.

BRANDON JACOBS +2000 (1089)
-- What we like is that the Giants don't have the same kind of faith in backup Ahmad Bradshaw as they did in Derrick Ward. That means Jacobs, who is big and strong and averaged five yards a carry last season, will get the ball more from a coach and offensive coordinator who insist on running the ball. That puts him in our top five and also makes him a value play at 20/1.
